Igloo, Southeast Asia’s full-stack insurtech, has published a 2026 data report showing Indonesian travellers buy travel insurance a median of just two days before departure, with 30% buying on the day of travel itself.
Medical cover dominates their priorities, named by 92% of customers as their top concern, while Covid-19 protection has fallen to last place at 23%, after years as a headline feature of travel products.
The report draws on a year of transactions across 2025 from igloo.co.id, Igloo’s direct-to-consumer platform in Indonesia.
International trips make up 65% of policies sold, with Japan the most popular destination at 26% of international policies, followed by China and Malaysia at 11% each.
Long-haul trips carry the highest premiums, averaging USD 50 for Europe, reflecting their longer average length of eight days against three for domestic trips.
Sales peak in November and December around year-end travel, and 55% of quotes convert into a purchased policy.
Forty-one percent of customers have bought at least twice, paying 31% more per policy than first-time buyers.

“Last minute travel insurance purchase tells us people do not plan for travel protection. They buy when something reminds them, usually in the evening, often on the day they travel,” said Raunak Mehta, Co-Founder and CEO of Igloo. “This has shaped our latest AI feature, a chat-based agent who guides customers through discovery to purchase.”
That assistant, Igi, launched in Indonesia in June 2026, guiding customers from destination selection through payment and policy issuance within a single conversation.
Users who engaged with Igi were 44% more likely to complete a purchase than those using the website alone.
