The Indonesian government is moving to strengthen the direction of AI development and adoption nationwide.
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has confirmed that it will soon enact two key AI-related documents as Presidential Regulations (Perpres).
The documents are the National AI Strategy 2020–2045 and the AI ethics framework. The State Secretariat is currently finalising both documents.
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria said the adoption of these documents would form a critical foundation for national AI governance.

“Both will be issued as Presidential Regulations in the near future,”
he told Kontan on the sidelines of the AI Pre-Summit press conference in Jakarta on Wednesday (21 January).
Through these regulations, the government aims to ensure that AI development and use proceed in a structured, secure, and responsible manner. The scope covers government, business, academia, and industry.
Nezar noted that the urgency of establishing AI regulations has increased alongside the rapid growth of Indonesia’s digital economy.
Indonesia’s digital economy is projected to reach US$230 billion by 2030. This projection highlights the need for policies that guide the effective and sustainable use of technology.
The National AI Strategy and the AI ethics framework will emphasise trust and transparency. They will also focus on digital talent development and accountability in the deployment of AI technologies.
AI implementation will focus on national priority sectors, including healthcare, public governance, education, food security, and mobility.
“This will serve as a national guideline for developing and using AI,”
Nezar said.
