Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) has identified two AI-driven fraud methods now most frequently used in the country: voice cloning and deepfake impersonation.

Financial losses from fraud reached Rp7.8 trillion between November 2024 and November 2025.

According to Katadata, OJK received more than 70,000 reports related to AI-enabled scams as of August 2025.

Criminals use AI to mimic the voices of family members, friends, or colleagues to request urgent money transfers, while deepfake videos convincingly replicate a person’s face and expressions, making victims believe they are communicating with someone they know.

Friderica Widyasari Dewi, OJK’s Chief Executive for Consumer Protection, said perpetrators harvest audio and video from social media to imitate victims’ close contacts, increasing the likelihood of deception.

The Indonesia Anti-Scam Centre (IASC), operating since 22 November 2024, recorded 343,402 fraud reports up to 11 November 2025.

Of 563,558 reported bank accounts, 106,222 have been blocked.

While total public losses reached Rp7.8 trillion, blocked-fund recovery amounted to Rp386.5 billion.

OJK’s Satgas PASTI has also shut down hundreds of illegal financial activities, including 611 illegal lending platforms, 96 potentially abusive personal-loan offers, and 69 investment scams involving impersonation and fraudulent schemes.

From 2017 to 12 November 2025, the task force halted 14,005 illegal entities.

OJK urges the public to verify suspicious requests through separate channels, safeguard personal data, and treat unusual voices or videos with caution.

Authorities are strengthening oversight with BSSN, the Ministry of Digital Communication, police, and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, including action against unauthorised umrah-related content.
